The screw and the barrel form the extrusion system of the extruder. To illustrate the importance of the extrusion system, it is often referred to as the heart of the extruder.

The extruder screw should be more critical than the barrel. This is because of an extruder’s productivity, plasticization quality, additive dispersion, melt temperature, power consumption, etc. It depends on the performance of the extruder screw.

How to evaluate what is a good extruder screw? From the perspective of the extrusion process, the screw should be evaluated from at least the following aspects.

1. Plasticization quality.

An extruder screw must first be able to produce products that meet the quality requirements. The production of products should have the required physical, chemical, mechanical and electrical properties; with the required apparent quality, such as the ability to meet the user’s requirements for bubbles, crystals, color dispersion uniformity, etc.

2. Yield.

Yield is the amount of output or extrusion through a given head under the premise of ensuring the quality of plasticization. A good extruder screw should have a high plasticizing capacity. The output is generally expressed in kg/h or kg/(r/min).

3. Unit consumption.

Single consumption refers to the energy consumed per 1kg of plastic extruded. It is generally expressed as N/Q, where N is the power, unit kW; Q is the output, unit kg.

4. Adaptability.

The adaptability of the screw refers to the screw’s ability to adapt to processing different plastics, matching different heads and different products. The stronger the adaptability. Often accompanied by a reduction in plasticizing efficiency.

5. Ease to manufacture.

A good extruder screw must also be easy and inexpensive to manufacture.

The above criteria must be considered together, emphasizing only one aspect is one-sided. Of course, it is also allowed to focus on different requirements to ensure that a particular criterion is met.
